In this context, fundamental physical properties of matter, such as the refractractive index, conductivity, or resistivity, are studied using terahertz spectroscopy. The lectures will begin with basic concepts a of light matter interaction, in particular, how such concepts are used to determine refractive indices of varying susbtances, like semiconductors, magnetic samples, or liquid water. In addition, the use of pump-probe spectrocopy to investigate conductivity and some other nonlinear processes in matter will be discussed. The lecture will take place every tuesday from 2 - 4 pm

    Julia Isabel Faisst
    • Score: 5.61  Climate change, energy exploitation, resource depletion, air pollution, water insecurity—in an age of increasingly threatened ecosystems, one may ask: how can literature, visual media, and the humanities more generally approach the environmental crisis and respond to key environmental issues and debates? This seminar serves as an introduction to both ecocriticism and the environmental humanities , taking into account that ecocriticism no longer solely focuses on the relationship between literature and the environment, but also scrutinizes human interaction with the natural world in visual cultures and other media. In the age of the Anthropocene, we investigate how the environmental humanities as an interdisciplinary area of research challenge the idea that human cultures stand in opposition

    Christian Lenz
    • Score: 5.45  After her death in 1901, a new, albeit short era arose: the Edwardian Age. Cut short by both the king’s death and the beginning of the First World War, it presented an equally impressive version of boyhood. It is from this relatively short period around the turn of the century that we will take and look at three of the most influential depictions of boys and their childhoods: Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island (1883), Rudyard Kipling’s Jungle Book (1894) and Peter and Wendy by J.M. Barrie (1904). What these texts have in common is that their male protagonists come of age (or not) in the wild or nature in general: it informs their idea of self and of their station(s) in life. In order to understand these texts, we will discuss the topics of gender, representation, narratology
