In this context, fundamental physical properties of matter, such as the refractractive index, conductivity, or resistivity, are studied using terahertz spectroscopy. This first part gives a broad overview that ranges from early imaginations of America to roughly 1900, covering pre-contact and colonial times, the revolutionary period and the early republic, Romanticism and the Civil War, and reconstruction and the Gilded Age . The lecture includes the most important aesthetic developments in various literary genres with particular concern for their cultural, social, political and medial contexts. This includes the disciplinary history of American Studies as a field, its practices of canonization, as well as other theoretical issues, including current paradigms and discourses. The lecture will combine a broad overview with extensive analyses of exemplary texts. All reading material will be provided digitally on Moodle.

Hier trifft die Philosophie des Geistes auf die Philosophie des Tanzes. Der orientalische Tanz verkörpert eine Weltanschauung. Er ist eine Lebensphilosophie in Dynamik und Emotion. Bis heute hören wir das Echo aus einer fernen Zeit. Ursprünglich drückte der Tanz die Geheimnisse des Lebens und des Todes aus, so wie die Menschen diese damals verstanden. Es wurde insbesondere dann getanzt, wenn ein bedeutsames Ereignis – freudig oder traurig - das seelische Gleichgewicht zu zerstören drohte. In dieser Veranstaltung wollen wir uns mit dem binnenkörperlichen Bewegungsvokabular des orientalischen Tanzes vertraut machen und den gesundheitsfördernden Benefit ausgiebig nutzen. Die behutsamen Bewegungen steigern Lebensenergie und Lebensfreude.

Commercially produced textbooks are the most used teaching materials in the German ELT classroom. However, teaching materials are more than just textbooks. According to Tomlinson (2011: xiii), they can be defined as “anything which is used to help language learners to learn.” This encompasses videos and movies, podcasts and audiobooks , games, novels, newspaper articles and entries from social media platforms to name but a few. In this class we will focus on textbooks as well as other forms of teaching materials and discuss sets of criteria that can be used to guide the processes of evaluating, adapting, and supplementing already existing materials. We will discuss how communicative competence as one of the main goals of ELT has recently evolved due to the presence of English as a lingua franca. Based on this discussion, we will learn how to best utilize different teaching materials in the classroom and present and discuss our own created tasks.
