[154213] Intersections of Gender and Genre: The British Novel in the Long 18th Century — Proseminar
Christian Lenz, Katrin Röder- Score: 8.13 Intersections of Gender and Genre: The British Novel in the Long 18th Century Leading scholars exploring the development of the novel in the long eighteenth century refer to the period as being marked not only by the cultural formation of a binary model of gender identity but also by a ‘gender revolution’ and the ‘feminization’ of the genre of the novel (K. Binhammer), grounding their assertions on the rise of the female first-person narrator and the growing number of female authors and readers. We will examine literary constructions of femininity, masculinity and discussions of sexual desire in the emerging genres of the sentimental novel, the ‘queer gothic’ and the ‘sapphic picaresque’ (K. Binhammer) and ask in which ways they participate in, respond to and challenge the rise of the binary model of gender identity. Texts We will discuss the following novels

[154671] Black Lit Matters: Toni Morrison — Hauptseminar
M. A. Sibylle Klemm- Score: 7.44 In this course, we will explore selected fiction and non-fiction works of Pulitzer- and Nobel-Prize winning author Toni Morrison. Like no other writer, Morrison has affected the development of African-American literature in the latter part of the 20th century. Starting with her first novel The Bluest Eye, we will read four of her novels in chronological order, focusing on the emergence and development of her major themes as well as her stylistic devices. Although Morrison is best known for her novels her essays are worthwhile readings since they provide interesting perspectives on American literature and culture. In addition to these works, we will learn more about Morrison from her interviews and some secondary literature. Please get a copy of the following books: The Bluest Eye, Song

[154252] Emplotting (Un)Happiness in British Novels and Films — Hauptseminar
Christian Lenz, Katrin Röder- Score: 6.74 Emplotting (Un)Happiness in British Novels and Films This seminar explores one of the most important subjects of the British novel in the 18th century and beyond, the question of individual, familial, communal and societal (un)happiness. It addresses the significance of different philosophical, political and economic conceptions of (un)happiness, the ways in which they act as hermeneutic frames and genre-shaping forces and asks how these conceptions of (un)happiness are represented, problematized, negotiated and critiqued in novels from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries and in two films from the early 21st century. We will analyze happiness as a narrative structure that is characterized by specific forms of emplotment, temporalities and affective conversions. Furthermore, seminar discussions will examine in how far the selected works represent happiness and unhappiness as opposites or (as suggested by Sara Ahmed in her book The Promise of Happiness) as inextricably connected concepts and modes of being. Texts The seminar focuses on the following novels and films: Daniel Defoe: The Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe (1719) Charlotte Brontë: Jane Eyre (1847) Hanif Kureishi: The Buddha of Suburbia (1990) Bend It Like Beckham (dir

[023139] Laboratory of condensed matter physics: Time-domain terahertz spectroscopy — Vorlesung mit Übung
Zhe Wang, Ahmed Ghalgaoui- Score: 6.68 Time domain terahertz spectroscopy consists of lectures in conjunction with laboratory courses giving the students the opportunity to directly apply the material from the lectures in the laboratory. In this context, fundamental physical properties of matter, such as the refractractive index, conductivity, or resistivity, are studied using terahertz spectroscopy. The lectures will begin with basic concepts a of light matter interaction, in particular, how such concepts are used to determine refractive indices of varying susbtances, like semiconductors, magnetic samples, or liquid water. In addition, the use of pump-probe spectrocopy to investigate conductivity and some other nonlinear processes in matter will be discussed. The lecture will take place every tuesday from 2 - 4 pm

[154674] Thomas Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow — Hauptseminar
Sascha Pöhlmann- Score: 6.38 Thomas Pynchon’s 1973 Gravity’s Rainbow is quite simply the best and most important American novel ever. It is a notoriously complex text with a reputation that most readers may find daunting, and at the same time it is utterly rewarding and still groundbreaking after 50 years. It tells the story of Lieutenant Tyrone Slothrop and his hunt for the V2 rocket in the destroyed Zone of Germany just as the Second World War ends, but it also tells the story of transnational conspiracies, colonial histories, technological innovations and personal grudges and obsessions that span centuries, and it is a genuinely global novel. With hundreds of characters (including an octopus and an immortal lightbulb) and dozens of plots that may or may not go anywhere, it is the most thrilling, infuriating, entertaining , challenging read out there. We’ll make sense of it together, reading-group style. Please get a copy of the novel and read the first section as soon as you’re accepted for the class. This seminar ties in with the one-day symposium “Elfriede Jelinek übersetzt Thomas Pynchon,” which will take place in the afternoon of October 24, 2024 at Literaturhaus Dortmund. Attending the symposium is mandatory for all

[154253] Imperial Monsters — Hauptseminar
Christian Lenz- Score: 5.35 this Imperial dream – both external and internal. Therefore, a band of (fictitious) protectors is assembled – the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. In this course, we will consider the first volume of the graphic novel series by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill and bring together real events and fictitious accounts: focussing on the pride of the British people during the height of their Empire and the fears of reverse colonialisation, the source novels Moore and O’Neill employ to create their League speak volumes of the social and literary atmosphere at the turn of the twentieth century. Using methods of close reading and applying various theories to the texts, students will gain a better understanding of a (literary) period that has created some of the most memorable monsters. Texts Please obtain and read the following novels: (The Wordsworth or Penguin editions are recommended, you might want to start soon.) Bram Stoker: Dracula (ISBN 978-1853260865) H. [154676] ‘We all float down here’: The Reception of Stephen King — Hauptseminar
Sandra Danneil- Score: 3.79 Horror is undergoing an unprecedented boom in writing, cinema and television as well as videogames. But without Stephen King the horror genre would probably not be the same. The American horror-fiction writer has entered history as the “King of Horror”.SinceFormore than fifty years, the 76-year-old Kingwriteshas been writingabout two-thousand words per day, he has published about 65 novels into isolated communities which are threatened by an evil force that has already been lurking underneath people’s attention. Stephen King is the doorway to America’s subconscious which many filmmakers have attempted to infuse into their filmic adaptations. Looking only at the past ten years, King’s 1986 novel IT was resurrected by director Andrès Muschietti to become horror’s biggest box-office successes

[154501] Introduction to British Cultural Studies — Vorlesung
Dr. Cyprian Piskurek- Score: 3.75 The lecture offers an introductory overview of theoretical approaches and topics relevant for British cultural studies. While the meaning of 'culture' may seem to be quite evident at first glance, even the slightest probing underneath the surface reveals that it is not. As Raymond Williams, one of the most influential founding figures of British Cultural Studies, famously pointed out: "Culture /difference, representation, gender, race/ethnicity, place/space, cultural memory and many others. The discussion of theory will be complemented by a brief overview of British history (from 1500) and an introduction to the British political system. Tutorials: The topics dealt with in the lecture are recapitulated and deepened in optional tutorials (see information below). Assignment: End-of-term written test
