[160309] Semiconductor Physics II: Experiments with Semiconductor Quantum Devices — Vorlesung
Dr. rer. nat. Arne Ludwig- Score: 11.43 The lecture will focus on experiments on the quantum level with semiconductor structures. In this context quantized transport, spin properties, spin manipulations and optical phenomena will be presented. The experiments will largely cover self-assembled InAs quantum dots as a model system of an artificial atom. Exemplarily spin transport in self-assembled InAs quantum dots and the methods of optical readout of the sucessful spin initialization will be presented. Applications of the different devices with new functionality will be discussed. Applied quantum mechanics on nanostructured devices will be the central scope in this lecture. The students will gain insight in modern quantum experiments with semiconductor heterostructures. Applied quantum mechanics, transport phenomena, spin phenomena and (classical) electrostatics will be discovered exemplarily on semiconductor devices.Prüfungsmodalitäten:Oral examination S.M. [091006] Koreanische Sprache in populären Medien — Übung
Dr. Jaewon Nielbock-Yoon- Score: 9.42 Im Anschluss an die Kurse, Korean Language in Popular Media, werden die sprachlichen Fähigkeiten auf mittlerem Niveau weiter ausgebaut. Drawing upon an interdisciplinary approach, this course addresses several major themes focusing on the dynamics of the use of the language(s) in Korean media. Media literacy is the ability or skill to critically analyze for accuracy, credibility, or evidence of bias in the content created and consumed by various media, including radio and television, the internet, and social media. We will go beyond understanding and translating Korean media materials to English and German. We will be deconstructing media content (especially digital media) -photographs, advertisements, TV shows, movies, documentaries, public relations materials, websites - and develop an understanding of how this media content influences us and how we in turn can influence others by learning and using the language(s) that enables them to interact with media. We will also discuss the importance of multiple points of view, and learn to identify the Korean media's powerful leanings towards commercialism, collectivism, and specific ideologies while building your vocabulary and giving you the language skills needed to analyze what you read and watch. In the end you will demonstrate your increased media literacy in a culminating final project. Jaewon.Nielbock-Yoon@ruhr-uni-bochum.de Von der Lektorin werden selbst erstellte Materialien zur Verfügung gestellt. Class materials come from book chapters and newspaper/magazine articles, and will be links in the syllabus, emailed to students

[050616] Englishes on Social Media — Seminar
Prof. Dr. Christiane Meierkord, Olga Sadovnikova- Score: 7.90 Englishes on Social Media Digital communication has now become an integral part of our daily communication with others. This has gone along with changes in communication technologies, and these have affected the ways people use language(s) in their interactions, for example on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, and YouTube. At the same time, English has come to dominate social media channels and its many varieties (such as British, Australian, Indian, Nigerian, or Jamaican English) are no longer confined to geographical and cultural boundaries. In this seminar, we will see how English linguistics has approached this recent trend and carry out mini research projects that look at the form and function of Englishes on social media. Assessment/requirements: Übung: reading and response journal and/or data analysis

[050819] Social Media in ELT — Seminar
Nils Müller- Score: 7.54 Social Media in ELT of school education are the weakest group (ibid.). Other studies show that in Germany 92 per cent of girls and 83 per cent of boys between 10-19 use social networks. A reflective and responsible use of social media requires a wide range of competences from young people. Teaching in general but also ELT in particular can either ignore this fact or find ways to help students become proficient users of these networks. Philippe Wampfler, among others, criticises the fact that social media play too small a role in current teaching practice (cf. Wampfler, P. Generation „Social Media“. pp. 126f.). In this online seminar we will look at social media from an English teacher’s perspective and try to find ways of dealing with the subject in class. Students will create a teaching unit on the subject which

Jun.Prof. Dr. Jan Baedke- Score: 6.31 philosophy of physics? and “philosophy of biology?) have been developed not until the 18th century and reflect the increasing significance of specific scientific knowledge for modern philosophy. The lecture gives an overview over the present status of general philosophy of science. It deals, on the one hand, with problems of methods and certain key concepts (such as “explanation? and understanding?); on the other hand, it examines questions that focus on the significance of the historicity of scientific knowledge for the present sciences. The lecture is initially addressed to students of philosophy in general and of the master program HPS+ in particular. It is open for interested students of other subjects with (at least) basic knowledge in theoretical philosophy, which is possible to gain in the module Introduction to theoretical philosophy? (SE1). Parallel to the lecture an accompanying seminar will be offered which serves to deepen and to complement the topics of the lecture. Participation in the seminar is recommended, but only for students of HPS+ it is a requirement in order to complete the “basic module 1?. The language of the lecture will be English. Jun.-Prof. Dr. Luca Asselle- Score: 5.84 Course description: This is a follow up course of the "Differential Geometry 1“ lecture held in the fall term 2021/2022. In this course we will discuss several classical topics which are still of large interest in current research, such as: i) Morse theory resp. homology and its applications to geometry, topology, and dynamics (classification of surfaces, bounds on the number .) This lecture is aimed at students who would like to specialize in differential geometry, differential topology, or symplectic geometry, and is also suitable for physics students. Students are assumed to have good knowledge in analysis (Analysis 1-4) and geometry (linear algebra, differential geometry 1). Basic knowledge in functional analysis (Hilbert and Banach spaces) is desirable but not strictly necessary. The required functional analytical background for i) and ii) (infinite dimensional manifolds, Sobolev spaces of loops, the stable manifold theorem, the mountain pass theorem, etc.) will be thoroughly discussed during the course. The course will be taught entirely (lectures and exercise classes) in english. Vortragssprache: Englisch 1- Hirsch, Differential topology, Graduate Texts in Math. Monika Müller- Score: 5.81 these discourses are both reflected and criticized in nineteenth-century British and American print media and literature. While British authors, apart from an ever-present interest in gender often focused on the possible effects of evolution and devolution (e.g. Charles Kingsley in his book The Water Babies [1863]), American writers – such as Harriet Beecher Stowe – also worried about the effect that evolutionary theories had on the public representation of race and religion. In addition to the print media of the time, the new technology of photography also served to document and evaluate social change, and thus will also be considered in our discussions.  Please buy a copy of Charles Kingsley’s The Water-Babies (1863). Prof. Dr. phil. Burkhard Niederhoff- Score: 5.72 The eighteenth century saw the rise of sensibility (Empfindsamkeit in German). Sensibility has often been dismissed as sentimental, but it has been going surprisingly strong ever since its beginning about three hundred years ago, surfacing in today’s culture primarily in advertising and film. The lecture will focus on literary works from the eighteenth century, including masterpieces like it come from?). The lecture will be offered as a videocast with three additional Zoom sessions (not mandatory), in which students will have a chance to asks questions. I am aiming to make the entire lecture available at the beginning of the semester to make it possible for students to study at their own pace. Assessment/requirements: reading a selection of texts; response sheet and oral exam.
