[030007] Epistemology — Vorlesung
Jun.Prof. Dr Peter Brössel- Score: 7.63 This lecture is dedicated to classic topics of epistemology. What should I believe? What are justificatory reasons? What is knowledge? Can I trust the testimonies of others? How should I revise my credences in the face of disagreement with a peer or an expert? The lecture is dedicated exclusively to contemporary proposals to answer these questions and is, therefore, aimed at advanced students . The course also requires a certain familiarity with these epistemological questions from a historical and systematic perspective.

[050646] US Literary and Cultural Practices in the Long 20th Century — Vorlesung
Prof. Dr. Martin Lüthe- Score: 7.18 The (long) 20th century encompasses a broad range of literary and cultural practices, forms, innovations, and interventions. For example, a variety of texts from so-called ethnic literatures came to be slowly but surely included into the US literary canon. Texts written by Native Americans, African Americans, Mexican Americans, and Asian Americans have been published in big publishing houses , reviewed on the pages of the New York Times Book Review, and added to the reading lists of schools and colleges, which also brought about a backlash from institutions and agents of cultural gatekeeping. Similarly, cultural practices that are not primarily textual, such as music, performance, and film and television, have garnered increasing academic and critical attention; consider Kendrick Lamar’s Pulitzer price win (2017) for his “vernacular authenticity and rhythmic dynamism” here. In the course of this lecture, we will focus on important moments and crucial cultural texts from roughly the 1920s through the 1990s and thus aspire to come to terms with the changes and continuities of the last century in US cultural production. Texts will be made available on Moodle. The content of this lecture will be made available in an asynchronous format. The lectures will be published by Monday, 16.00 o’clock and I will be available on Mondays at 17.00 in Zoom for inquiries and discussions. The lecture on April 25th and the lecture before the written exam, on June 27th will be held in person in HGA 10, starting at 16.15, their recordings will be published by the end of the week on Moodle

I am aiming to make the entire lecture available at the beginning of the semester to make it possible for students to study at their own pace. Assessment/requirements: reading a selection of texts; response sheet and oral exam. The eighteenth century saw the rise of sensibility (Empfindsamkeit in German). Sensibility has often been dismissed as sentimental, but it has been going surprisingly strong ever since its beginning about three hundred years ago, surfacing in today’s culture primarily in advertising and film. The lecture will focus on literary works from the eighteenth century, including masterpieces like

[050657] Renaissance Culture — Vorlesung
Prof. Dr. phil. Anette Pankratz- Score: 5.47 Until today, the English Renaissance is deeply embedded in cultural memory: Henry VIII and his wives, Shakespeare in and out of love, Queen Elizabeth and Walter Raleigh bowling against the Armada. The aim of the lecture course is to put all these images connected with 16th-century England between the reigns of Henry VII and James I into the broader framework of the European Renaissance, i .e. the rediscovery of classical antiquity and the beginning of the modern world. It will look at the changes in the world picture, the Reformation and its consequences, the system of Tudor foreign and domestic politics, Elizabethan court culture, the beginnings of capitalism, colonialism and self-fashioning. Last but not least, the lecture course will focus on the flourishing Renaissance literature: from the sonnets and epics to the plays written for the newly established professional theatres. This will be an asynchronous online course, credited on a pass/fail basis. The weekly Units will contain pre-recorded Power Point Presentations and quizzes. There will be bi-weekly non-obligatory Zoom meetings for questions, clarifications and discussions. Assessment/requirements: 2,5 CP: passing the weekly online

[170096] Microeconomics of Competitiveness: Firms, Clusters and Economic Development — Seminar
Prof. Dr. Matthias Kiese, Simon Rohde- Score: 4.89 's or region's productivity. Course Contents and Structure The course has been designed not only for students at Harvard but as a platform that can be taught at universities throughout the world. The course platform consists of case studies and other written materials plus an extensive library of video content that can be used in class including lectures by Prof. Porter for all sessions and videotapes will typically include case discussions in small and large groups, audio-visual inputs featuring Prof. Porter and case protagonists, as well as a brief lecture input introducing the key theoretical concept illustrated by the case. As coursework, groups of up to four students prepare a case study analysing the competitiveness of a cluster of their own choice. The best paper will be submitted for a competition Course Objectives Microeconomics of Competitiveness (MOC) is a graduate course created in a multiyear development effort by Professor Michael E. Porter and the staff and affiliates of the Institute for Strategy and Competitiveness at Harvard Business School. The MOC course explores the determinants of competitiveness and successful economic development viewed from a bottom-up, microeconomic perspective. While sound macroeconomic policies, stable legal and political institutions, and improving social conditions create the potential for competitiveness, wealth is actually created at the microeconomic level. The sophistication and productivity of firms, the vitality of clusters, and the quality of the business environment in which competition takes place, are the ultimate determinants of a nation of case protagonists including heads of state, senior ministers, governors, and others. Following Harvard’s tradition, the course is based on case studies only. Each session deals with a particular company, region or country case investigating the drivers of competitiveness. As preparation for each session, all students are required to read the respective case of approx. 20 cases. A three-hour session

The collapse of the financial sector and the subsequent global recession , austerity measures and widespread inequality have dealt a blow to pre-crisis assumptions and convinced many that the “strange disappearance of capitalism” (Goodwin & Hetland 2009) from the social sciences seriously limits analyses. At the same time, decades of research on political ecology, intersectionality and social movements - among others - warn of a return to economistic and determinist theories ). Furthermore, we will read formative texts on the separation of the economic and the non-economic world, which deal with a variety of issues such as social reproduction and care, the autonomy of polities, North-South inequality and non-human nature. These concepts will relate critical theories of capitalism to social stratification along the lines of gender, ethnicity, citizenship, dis/ability, class at theories of collective mobilization across class and identity, including concepts such as the “multitude”, “populism” and the “mosaic”. This seminar will include own empirical research on a specific aspect of capitalism, intersectional inequality and social movements. Students will be grouped, pick one topic among the above-mentioned categories and produce a short podcast, which will be presented in the final session. Voraussetzungen für Studiennachweise / Modulprüfungen For the „Studiennachweis“: Active participation in the webinars, reading the seminar literature, submitting the work tasks in moodle. [128047] Objektorientierte Modellierung und Programmierung der Finite-Elemente-Methode / Objekt-oriented Modelling and Implementation of Structural Analysis Software (MSc-BI-W39 und MSc-CE-WP10) — Seminar
Prof. Dr. techn. Günther Meschke- Score: 4.29 HINWEIS: Die Einführungsveranstaltung findet am 01.04.2019 um 08:30 Uhr im HIC statt. Blockveranstaltung vom 22.07. - 02.08.2018 von 09:00 - 12:00 Uhr. Raum und Uhrzeit siehe Lehrstuhl. The seminar links the theory of finite element methods with object-oriented programming in the sense that the finite element theory is applied within a finite element program developed by the students. In order to gain insights into both topics – object-oriented programming and finite element theory – students implement an object-oriented finite element program for the analysis of spatial truss structures. This combination of the theory of numerical methods with object-oriented programming provides an inspiring basis for the successful study of computational engineering. In the lecture, the fundamentals of the finite element method and object-oriented programming are briefly summarized. The programming part of the course comprises two parts. In the first part, the topic is fixed: Students individually develop an object-oriented finite element program for the linear analysis of spatial truss structures. The program is verified by means of the static analysis of a representative benchmark and afterwards an extension of that software. Ultimately, the objective of the course is to stimulate new initiatives that can further establish the credibility of governance data generated by citizens and civil society to fight corruption, improve aid performance, and track implementation of the SDGs. A key element of the course is that the participants are expected to produce a “roadmap” to fight a specific corruption problem, using governance data with linkages to SDGs. At the end of each learning session, the participants are required to answer a few short questions relating to their own corruption problem for which they are developing a road map. In answering these questions, the participants identify key players who can help them, map out relevant indicators and datasets for assessing and measuring corruption, and come up with an advocacy strategy. The Summer School is offered as a partnership between Transparency International (TI), the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) at Ruhr University Bochum, and Afghanistan Public Policy Research Organization (APPRO). By the end of this course the participants will: Understand the scale, nature and cost of corruption on politics, economics, and society. Be familiar with a range of theoretical approaches to measuring and tackling corruption. Learn about the various stakeholders involved in governance reform, their competing interests as well as develop skills to generate the kind evidence-based advocacy that can drive policy reform. Know about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the SDGs, and particularly its governance facets. Develop familiarity with a number of typologies of indicators and datasets, as well as experience working hands-on with several actual governance indices. Prof. Dr. phil. Burkhard Niederhoff- Score: 2.80 Anglistik / Amerikastudien,B.A.-Studium Aufbaumodulphase,Englische Literatur nach 1700,Übungen There is a notion abroad that analysing poems is an occult gift that you are either born or – more likely – not born with. This course builds on the assumption that analysing poems is a skill that can be acquired, much like swimming, playing the piano or learning a foreign language. We will focus on different aspects such as genre, syntax, metre and metaphor to work our way into the complex structures of form and meaning provided by a selection of mostly canonical poems. We will also try our hand at the so-called ‘production-oriented’ method, i.e. the rewriting of a poem as a parody or the filling in of blanks, which is also taught in German schools and should therefore be interesting to students who aspire to be teachers. Covid permitting, this course will be taught on campus. Required texts: the poems will be provided by way of Moodle and/or a reader. Assessment/requirements: active participation in the lessons and a short paper (ca. 2500 words); the short paper will consist in a close reading of a poem or in an explanation of a production-oriented approach to a poem.

[030084] Theories of Self Consciousness — Seminar
Prof. Dr. Albert Newen- Score: 2.67 In this seminar, we will explore theories of self-consciousness. This includes a variety of phenomena which are part of or closely related to self-consciousness, namely the sense of agency, of ownership and the phenomenon of perspectivity as well as the role of an autobiographical self and its development. Especially concerning the latter we have to account for the role of memory for our autobiographical self. This seminar is a research-oriented seminar which especially enables the participants to develop a project which leads into a BA-thesis or a master-thesis. It has a focus in philosophy but will involve some psychogical texts as well. The main topic is the discussion of modern theories of human self-consciousness. Self-consciousness can be defined as the ability to consciously represent one ’s own states, especially (but not only) mental states, as one’s own (Newen, Vogeley 2003). Concerning self-consciousness, we can distinguish four central questions which allow us to illustrate the wide range of this central debate:The epistemological question: Do we have a privileged access to our own mental phenomena such that only we can know with certainty which mental phenomena we have ?The ontological question: Is there a self as an ontologically irreducible entity? The cognitive question: How can we investigate the natural basis of self-c. with the methods of empirical psychology and cognitive neuroscience? The question about personal identity: What is the criterion of being a person and of remaining the same person? In the seminar we will discuss texts concerning all dimensions of human self -consciousness.Furthermore, we will discuss the role of episodic memory for a self-model: how can we adequately describe the interaction of a narrative self, i.e. the autobiographical stories a person tells about herself, with her episodic memories? On the one hand, episodic memories are constructed in line with and thus constrained by a narrative self, on the other hand, the narrative self is at least partially constituted

Especially the distribution network is cur rently undergoing an evolutionary change. Decentralized feed-in systems (PV, wind, biomass) usually arise where distribution networks are historically rather weak. New sales products provide a much higher simultaneity factor. All German network operators have therefore focused their attention on the "smart grids" with a focus on distribution grids of activity of the energy industry Smart Grids The topic "Smart Grids" is structured as follows: Basics of Smart Grids and ICT Technology (ICT = Information and Communication Technology) Flexibility of load and generation in distribution networks Use of storage in the distribution network Effects of electro mobility on di

[050638] James Joyce: "Ulysses" — Seminar
Prof. Dr. phil. Burkhard Niederhoff- Score: 2.61 After having been serialised in a magazine, James Joyce’s Ulysses was published as a book in 1922. The seminar is offered with a nod in the direction of this anniversary. Students should be aware that, while Ulysses is one of the greatest novels (perhaps: the greatest) in the English language, it is also very demanding. It has been claimed that Ulysses cannot be read; it has to be studied . But for those who make the effort to study it, the rewards are immense; students who complete the course will have broadened their literary horizons and become more sophisticated readers. In the course, we will proceed at the rate of a chapter a week (skipping some chapters), with expert groups giving brief introductions. Those who want to prepare for the seminar, might want to read one or both of Joyce’s earlier works, Dubliners and A Portrait of the Artist as Young Man. Covid permitting, this course will be taught on campus. Required text: James Joyce, Ulysses, edited by Declan Kibberd and Seamus Deane, Penguin, 1992. Assessment/requirements: active participation; being part of an expert group preparing a chapter; a paper on one aspect of the chapter prepared.

[050692] Legal English — Übung
Dr. phil. Robert William Smith- Score: 2.61 The course will look in detail at a variety of legal texts – and hence legal concepts – from both a legal theory and a legal practice perspective. While the legal theory part will cover basic notions and schools of jurisprudence that should permit the analysis of legal systems and their evolution over large stretches of space and long periods of time, the model chosen for understanding the language of the common law system will be the legal system of England and Wales. By breaking down the system into its (historical) components the language and terminology of (and hence the ideas behind) this intricate system will be brought to light. By the same token the language of the common law system will be used to elucidate the inner workings of the model. As a result students should subsequently be in a better position to consider and appreciate legal English texts with the eye of a linguist, a lawyer and a (moral) philosopher. Recommended reading: Ian McLeod: Legal Theory. Houndmills: Palgrave Macmillan, 2007. Ian McLeod: Legal Method. Houndmills: Palgrave Macmillan, 2007. Jun.-Prof. Dr. Jessie Pons- Score: 2.60 A jātaka is a former birth of Siddhārtha Gautama, the Buddha. In these past existences, he was alternatingly an animal or a human, an ascetic or a prince, an outcast or a god. In the majority of these stories, the Bodhisattva perfects a virtue that the tale, often humorous and entertaining, inculcates. The largest collection of jātakas and certainly the most famous, is that of the Pāli canon , which counts no less than 547 stories. Yet these stories are preserved in all branches of Buddhism from South Asia to the West and are extent in textual, visual and theatrical forms. This seminar will concentrate on a selection of representative legends which illustrate the progress of the Bodhisattva’s carrier and will give particular attention to the following themes: - The formation processes of these stories and their parallels in non-Buddhist traditions such as the Pañcatantra (animal fables), the Hindu Mahābhārata and Purāṇas; - The impact of the geographical contexts of production as well as of religious and socio-political dynamics on the various retellings of a same jātaka; - The different levels of interplay between the textual, visual and performative media in the transmission of jātakas on a weekly basis. Attendance is mandatory in order to successfully complete the course. A jātaka is a former birth of Siddhārtha Gautama, the Buddha. [211037] Information Security — Seminar
Prof. Dr. Ghassan Karame- Score: 2.55 For the first time, we offer a Master seminar on Information Security. The seminar will focus on various security and privacy aspects in cryptocurrencies and blockchain platforms, security aspects of machine learning platforms, as well as on the security of secure hardware, such as Trusted Execution Environments. Students are expected to investigate a narrow topic based on recently published literature. The investigation findings are to be included in a report and presented in a 15-20 minute slot during the class. We will organize the seminar in the spirit of a scientific conference. Besides writing a report on the selected topic, students are expected to constructively review each other’s reports - akin the peer-review system commonly used in current academic conferences. At the end of this seminar, students will be able to study a narrowly-defined topic, understand basic insights into best research trends and practices in that topic, and write concise scientific reports with respect to their findings. Students will also develop experience in giving scientific presentations, and get valuable insights into peer-reviewing. Students will be evaluated based on the quality of their report

Calvin Dieter Ullrich- Score: 2.55 Hauptseminar: Having a body or Being a body? Master of Arts (M.A.),Master of Arts - 2 Fach (PO 2016),Modul MPR: Religionswissenschaft und Philosophie, What does it mean to ‘have’ a body? What does it mean to ‘be’ a body? These are questions which we are faced with today more than ever, precisely because the answers are in no way clear to us. Often the awareness of our bodies comes only secondary to thought and sometimes the presence of our bodies is made even more prevalent — think of our hyper-awareness of the nearness to other bodies now in this predominantly French school of phenomenology is a turn away from the Transcendental Ego to the priority of the body that we ‘are’, while at the same time, increasingly, a body that escapes any constitution by the phenomenological method. While pursuing these various thinkers of the body, questions will emerge for our reflection on the nature of sexual difference, political community, and the place of theology.

[050629] The Canterbury Tales: How to Do Things with Words and Narrative (SUMMER SCHOOL) — Seminar
Julia Wellnitz- Score: 2.55 SUMMER SCHOOL Geoffrey Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales features a multiplicity of voices. This variety is created by the frame story in which a group of 30 pilgrims meet to go on a pilgrimage from Southwark in London to the shrine of St Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The pilgrims’ destination is Canterbury Cathedral, which is located in the historic centre of the city and less than two miles away from our Summer School venue at the University of Kent. 2020 was the 850th anniversary of the murder of Becket in Canterbury Cathedral, and the cathedral is still a place for pilgrims to halt today. Hence, this seminar will give you the chance to experience and explore Chaucer’s and the pilgrims’ voices in an authentic setting. Chaucer’s pilgrims come from various social backgrounds and include , among others, a miller, a man of law, a pardoner and a prioress. They do not only tell tales but they also interact with each other, that is, they tease, interrupt and insult each other. This situation invites a double approach to the tales, which we will take in this seminar. On the one hand, we will adopt a narratological perspective and examine the tales as narratives that tell stories . On the other hand, the various forms of speech and dialogues in the work invite the perspective of a field that deals with language use in context and with meaning created in interactions between speakers, pragmatics. Other than conversations in Modern English, historical texts like The Canterbury Tales are usually only preserved in written form. We will look at how historical pragmatics can help us to gain insights into written texts from an earlier stage of the English language. This course will introduce students to central concepts, approaches and methods in historical pragmatics and modern narratology. From a pragmatic perspective, these will include speech act theory, implicature and deixis. From a narratological perspective, we will investigate some recent approaches to narratives

[050673] Critical Tele-Visions — Übung
Dr. Matthias Zucker- Score: 2.53 The last 20+ years have seen dramatic shifts in the US television landscape: premium cable networks like HBO have done away with broadcast television’s singular obsession with ratings, leading to challenging long-form series that allowed themselves to unfold more like a great novel than a formulaic procedural. Streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime or Disney+ have not only granted subscribers access to TV classics, but also produced original formats that have attained significant cultural relevance and created a completely new phenomenon along the way: ‘binge-watching’. In this class, we will not necessarily binge, but certainly watch a variety of TV/streaming formats, ranging from the traditional series to documentaries and reality TV, to analyze both the medium itself and its products for what they tell us about a changing America. Questions we might ask include: have the shenenigans of fictional US presidents as seen on House of Cards or Veep set the stage for the shenenigans in a certain (now-former) White House? Is reality TV strictly a Foucauldian 'panopticon' or have recent examples like RuPaul's Drag Race introduced a more positive, empowering spin on the genre? Has online streaming changed the nature of ‘the viewer’ – and if so, is there more agency now or have we become subordinate to the whims of the algorithm? This and much more will guide our week-to-week discussions as we attempt to look beyond the mere entertainment and find points of departure that might lead to a fruitful critical engagement with the medium television. [030086] Verification, Falsification and empirical Negation. Developments of Themes from the Work of Michael Dummett — Seminar
PD Dr. Nils Kürbis, Jun.Prof. Dr. Hitoshi Omori- Score: 2.51 The characteristic property of intuitionistic logic is the failure of the principle of bivalence, the principle of classical logic that every proposition is either true or false. This is reflected in the failure of Av¬A to be a theorem. The notion of truth motivating intuitionistic logic is one that is epistemically constrained. Truth is explained in terms of or even equated to proof or verification. According to intuitionists, a proposition is true only if it has been proved (in mathematics) or otherwise verified (in other areas of enquiry).Intuitionistic logic is thus of relevance to many questions central to epistemology. It also has metaphysical motivations. Truth is the link between language or thought and reality. Propositions for which bivalence fails, those for which we neither possess a verification nor a verification of their negations, leave reality open in certain respects.Intuitionistic logic has been proposed as a logic for the open future or vagueness and other areas of discourse where there is `no fact of the matter' whether certain propositions are true or false. If there is as yet no sign of an impending sea battle or conditions that would prevent one from taking place, then `There will be a sea battle' is neither provable nor refutable: the future is genuinely open in that respect. The first sessions of this seminar consist of an introduction to intuitionistic logic, its philosophical motivations and formal characteristics. There will be an overview over its formalisations in axiomatic, natural deduction and sequent calculus style and the different proof systems will be explained. These sessions provide the basis on which we will study various systems that expand intuitionistic logic. We will specifically focus on two kinds of expansions, one related to the notions of verification and falsification, and another related to the notion of empirical negation. Falsification is here to be understood as a notion independent of verification of negation

This course of advanced classical Sanskrit is intended for students who have completed the CERES course ‘Sanskrit II’ or have comparable prior knowledge of Sanskrit grammar and vocabulary, including fluency in reading Devanagari script. Apart from introducing some final aspects of Sanskrit grammar from the handbook (The Cambridge Introduction to Sanskrit, A. M. Ruppel, 2017, Cambridge University Press), this is a reading course (‘Lektüre’) focusing on epic Sanskrit, primarily verses of the Rāma story (Rāmāyaṇa and Rāmopākhyāna), time permitting also other verses from the Mahābhārata. Students independently prepare assigned verses, developing a full grammatical analysis and a working translation, reviewed together in class. Credits are obtained by attendance and active class participation, preparation of assigned verses, and an examination at the end of the course. By the end of the course, students should have a firm command of Sanskrit grammar, a broad, active Sanskrit vocabulary, and sufficient experience in analysing and translating classical Sanskrit , Buddhist, and Jain traditions since two millennia and longer. It has been of lasting impact on the cultures, religions, and languages of South, Southeast, East, and Central Asia. Unsurprisingly then, there exists an inexhaustible body of Sanskrit texts, and far from being a ‘dead’ language, it remains alive in contemporary India and in globalised South Asian traditions. Dr. phil. Daniel McCann- Score: 2.48 We all remember the salacious bits – those moments when a text lurches into life with a vividly realised depiction of the lurid and the awful. Nowhere is this more apparent than in medieval literature, a poetic corpus that celebrates the sinful by conveying complex narrative psychologies that are as beguiling as they are reprehensible. This course will explore the literary and cultural impact of theology and medicine upon medieval literature. It will provide broad historical contextualisation of the relevant theological and psychological issues, and explore the uses of personification and personification allegory in a range of Middle English texts. No prior knowledge of Middle English is needed, nor do you require knowledge of medieval theology. As the course will cover a range of texts

[030089] Compositionality in Language, Mind, and Brain — Seminar
Prof. Dr. Markus Werning- Score: 2.47 Compositionality is a key concept in linguistics, the philosophy of mind and language, and throughout the cognitive sciences. Understanding how it works is a central element of syntactic and semantic analysis, and a challenge for models of cognition. In this seminar, we will read papers on the state of the art in all aspects of the subject from every relevant field. They reveal the connections in different lines of research, and highlight its most challenging problems and opportunities. The force and justification of compositionality have long been contentious. First proposed by Frege as the notion that the meaning of an expression is syntax-dependently determined by the meaning of its parts, it has since been deployed as a constraint on the relation between theories of syntax and semantics, as a means of analysis, and, more recently, as underlying the structures of representational systems such as mental concepts, computer programs and neural architectures. This seminar explores these and many other dimensions of one of the most exciting fields in the study of language and cognition.Aside from active participation, participants will be expected to give a presentation in English.
