[210033] Mediating the Transcendent in South Asia — Kolloquium / Seminar
Dr. Serena Autiero, Jun.-Prof. Dr. Jessie Pons- Score: 11.73 has gained increasing attention in the last decades, the intersection between religion and (im)material objects in South Asian contexts remains to be addressed more specifically. This seminar brings together Master students, doctoral candidates and early career researchers who share an interest in the interplay between religion and media in South Asian religious traditions, may it be during Buildings, books, sculptures, pilgrimage sites, music, performances, or social networks are material and immaterial objects entangled in religious practices and belief-systems. Their role in religious experience and the communication thereof is manifold. They may be perceived as manifestations of the transcendent, as visual expressions of religious semantics or as a medium facilitating communication between worldly and otherworldly spheres. They may foster the encounter between religious groups, allow negotiating religious identities or provide a forum for religious discourses. While the academic field of religion and media has gained increasing attention in the last decades, the intersection between religion and (im)material objects in South Asian contexts remains to be addressed more specifically.  This seminar brings together Master students, doctoral candidates and early career researchers who share an interest in the interplay between religion and media in South Asian religious traditions, may it be during historical or contemporary periods. This course is envisaged as a colloquium which will meet every week to discuss topics pertinent to the participants’ research. It will offer a platform for participants to share their work, whether prospective or on-going. It will combine the presentation of concrete case-studies based in different historical contexts with the discussion of more theoretical reading that reflect on the relationship between religion, material, and immaterial objects as a specifically South-Asian phenomenon. This reading will draw upon modern scholarship

[050643] Nineteenth-Century Cultural Discourses (Summer School) — Seminar
Monika Müller- Score: 11.08 Nineteenth-Century Cultural Discourses (Summer School) SUMMER SCHOOL 2022 Due to industrialization and advances in the science of biology, the nineteenth century was a period of rapid social change in both GB and the US. Industrialization occasioned a move from rural areas to the cities and biological findings caused a crisis of faith in the Western world. The study of nineteenth-century social discourses provides a deepened understanding of these transformations and their public representations. The social models presented in various, highly fascinating nineteenth-century sociological, philosophical, and biological treatises shed light on contemporaneous constructions of class, race and gender. Proceeding from an analysis of texts by theorists such as Charles Darwin, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Charles Henry Lewes, and Herbert Spencer, we will investigate how that evolutionary theories had on the public representation of race and religion. In addition to the print media of the time, the new technology of photography also served to document and evaluate social change, and thus will also be considered in our discussions.  Please buy a copy of Charles Kingsley’s The Water-Babies (1863). Additional primary and secondary materials will be made available on Moodle

Dr. Simona Szakács-Behling- Score: 8.00 Schooling beyond the nation-state: border crossing aspects of formal education The advent of mass-schooling in the 19th century and nation-building across the world have been deeply intertwined. However, with increasing globalisation and cross-border dynamics both affecting and reflecting schooling patterns, the national paradigma seems to come into question more than ever. But is this still so if one considers these phenomena systematically and historically, and what do these processes mean for schools and their protagonists today? In this seminar we will examine this and related questions by first examining formal schooling as an institution of the nation-state from a historical perspective. We will then move to sociological, anthropological, and comparative education approaches to understand contemporary schooling in the context of globalisation and transnationalisation of everyday lives of people crossing manifold borders. With the help of foundational texts and empirical examples, we will look closely at processes of internationalisation, transnationalisation, Europeanisation and globalisation in formal schooling and what these mean for the different actors and stakeholders involved. Finally, we will interpret research data together and examine school

KGs, as building blocks of many Artificial Intelligence approaches , allow for harnessing and uncovering patterns from the data. Currently, KGs are used in the data-driven business processes of multinational companies like Google, Microsoft, IBM, eBay, and Facebook. Furthermore, thousands of KGs are openly available on the web following the Linked Data (https://lod-cloud.net/) principles. Econometrics allows to analyze data sets characterizing economicproblems in a quantitative manner . To that end, economic modelsare cast into econometric models, which can then be applied to theeconomic data at hand. Two of the most important econometricmodels are the univariate and multivariate linear regressionmodels, whose properties and underlying assumptions arediscussed in detail. Violations of these assumptions and theirdetection, as well as remedies for such cases in terms of modelvariants are discussed next. Models for binary dependent variablesand for time series data are also briefly discussed.

The pilgrims’ destination is Canterbury Cathedral, which is located in the historic centre of the city and less than two miles away from our Summer School venue at the University of Kent. 2020 was the 850th anniversary of the murder of Becket in Canterbury Cathedral, and the cathedral is still a place for pilgrims to halt today. Hence, this seminar will give you the chance to experience and explore Chaucer’s and the pilgrims’ voices in an authentic setting. Chaucer’s pilgrims come from various social backgrounds
