Dr. phil. Daniel McCann- Score: 7.37 The emotions constitute an essential facet of human existence, and play a central role in all forms of literary and artistic production. Although the experience of emotional states is trans-historical, each culture discursively frames and conceptualises those states in specific ways. This is certainly the case during the Middle Ages, as the cultural discourses of medicine, religion , and literature frame and form this aspect of life. Yet, not every feeling is a good one. Some emotions cut across accepted social boundaries, are extraordinarily intense, or even debilitate those who feel them. As medieval medicine made clear, some emotions were better understood as diseases of the mind, as forms of madness, and indeed as signs of sin. Key texts from the period showcase the sheer variety
